Mestizaje (hybridization) emerged as a discourse during the colonial period and was also conceived as a practice of coexistence. It is a mixture that occurs through differences understood as "racial." Due to the colonial nature of racialized difference, mestizaje also necessarily operates through class (and cultural) differences. It is also conceived as a form of sexual reproduction of new generations of mestizos (mixed people), necessarily operating through gender differences. Mestizaje seeks to cross social boundaries and make the hierarchies of social life, and therefore of coexistence, porous. However, from another perspective, miscegenation is a key mechanism for the reproduction and reinforcement of race, class, and gender hierarchies. The aim is to explore these contradictory perspectives on the development of racial formations in Mexico and America in general in the current debates on the dynamics of these self-declared multicultural societies. Studies on mestizaje or hybridization have changed the way we talk about identity, culture, difference, inequality, multiculturalism, and about conflict classification binomials in the social sciences: tradition/modernity, north/south, local/global.
